Your eyes are keeping a secret clock. 👁️⏳

Transcript

In one sentence, what's the single most important thing your research has uncovered about light and the human brain?

I think that the eye has a dual function. It's the organ of sight — it provides us with our image of the world — but it's also the organ of time, because it detects the light-dark cycle and that sets the internal day to the external world. The key thing is that cells within the eye, different from the rods and cones, convey that light-to-dark information into the master clock within the suprachiasmatic nuclei. I think it's this dual function that has become the most exciting thing for me.
