Awareness Without Action

I think the field is certainly aware of sex differences between men and women and their responses in terms of sleep and circadian rhythms. Are we taking that seriously? Well, yes and no. Some of the funding bodies are sensitive to the fact that if you want to study two sexes, you need to double the size of the grant. But then if you just look at the bottom line, you see: "God, that's such an expensive grant. You're not going to get it above a threshold." So there's kind of an awareness — certainly the field is aware of it. Are the funders aware of it and taking it seriously? No.

A Rejected Grant and a Stubborn Door

Recently we submitted a grant on this topic to the Medical Research Council with what I think were really exciting ways of dissecting what the fundamental differences are in the master clock in the SCN between male and female rats and mice. And we didn't get it. Now, it's highly competitive, but I thought they might be interested in the topic — and they weren't. So we're still knocking at the door to let us in. But we'll keep on knocking.
