A leading forensic psychiatric care facility · Europe
In a secure facility, light is the environment.
At a leading forensic psychiatric care facility in Europe, patients live, sleep, and recover almost entirely indoors. Earthlight measured what the building's light is doing to sleep, stability, and safety, and translated it into the financial language a care institution can act on.
Where this stands
The assessment is complete and the Human ROI model is built. Measured outcomes publish here as they land. No projections stand in for them.
01. The building
A building that is the whole world
The client is a leading forensic psychiatric care facility in Europe, treating adults with complex psychiatric disorders under secure conditions, alongside supported housing and outpatient forensic care. Its work is recovery that prevents reoffending.
For most patients the building is the whole world for years at a time. Whatever light it provides is the light their biology runs on.
02. The challenge
When patients can't go outside, the lighting has a clinical job
In a secure setting, time outdoors is limited by design. Disrupted sleep and a flattened day–night rhythm are not comfort problems here. They show up as agitation, incidents, medication pressure, and harder nights for staff and patients alike.
The clinical case for circadian light is well documented. What a care institution needs is the other half: what the current lighting is costing, and what correcting it is worth, in terms a board and a budget can weigh.
03. What we did
Measure the building, model the stakes
Earthlight is running the facility through the same program every engagement follows: measure, model, prove.
01
Assessment
Independent experts measure the existing light across patient rooms, living groups, and corridors, establishing a circadian baseline for the building as it is actually operated.
02
Human ROI model
The current condition and the corrected design are modeled side by side: sleep, stability, incident exposure, and staffing impact, translated into the financial format the institution's decision-makers already use.
03
Pilot
A single living group runs a pilot at 70% circadian correction, so staff and leadership experience the difference before any capital decision is made.
04. The results
Results, as they're measured
Measurement is underway. This section fills in with what actually changed (sleep, incidents, and the day-to-day texture of the wards) rather than projections.
Your building has a number too.
